Six Things About Wire Rope Slings

I. What is a wire rope sling?

Wire rope slings are made from wire rope through processing and are primarily used for lifting, pulling, tensioning, and bearing loads. Characterized by high strength, light weight, smooth operation, and resistance to sudden, complete breakage, they serve as flexible connectors between lifting equipment and the load being hoisted. From a manufacturing perspective, they are classified as metal products—either as an extended‑application product of wire rope or as a deeply processed derivative.

II. Practical Applications of Wire Rope Slings

In practical applications, wire rope slings are extensively used in lifting operations across industries such as port handling, maritime and land transportation, mining, metallurgy, forestry, petrochemicals, shipbuilding, railway bridge construction, power‑generation infrastructure, and aerospace. In particular, for hoisting and transport tasks—especially in port‑side lifting operations—more than half of all wire ropes must be fabricated into slings before they can be put into service.

III. Standards and Specifications for Wire Rope Slings

According to statistics, China’s annual production of wire‑rope slings exceeds 120,000 to 150,000 tons. However, despite this substantial output, the country has yet to fully implement standardized, specialized manufacturing for such a wide range of sling products, and its standards system remains incomplete. For decades, Jianfeng Sling has been engaged in the design, manufacture, and sale of wire‑rope slings, possessing the specialized knowledge and expertise required for standardized production, thereby instilling strong confidence in its customers.

IV. Several Classifications of Common Wire Rope Slings

Wire rope rigging can be classified according to its manufacturing method into: pressed wire rope rigging, spliced wire rope rigging, seamless wire rope loops, and cast wire rope rigging.

1 . Pressed wire rope rigging

Pressed wire rope slings are one of the most commonly used types of wire rope rigging, typically available in two configurations: with eyelets and without. Compared with traditional wire rope slings, pressed slings feature a more innovative design, advanced manufacturing processes, and higher production efficiency. They offer enhanced safety and reliability, can handle heavier loads, and provide strong, secure terminations. Their joint surfaces are smooth, free of cracks, flash, and burrs, making them well suited for a wide range of specialized industrial applications.

2 .Spliced wire rope rigging

Spliced wire rope slings are manufactured by splicing one or both ends of the wire rope into a loop. Compared with swaged wire rope slings, spliced slings are more cumbersome to handle and employ relatively outdated manufacturing processes; they also require a greater length of wire rope per sling, resulting in higher costs. Moreover, the strength of the splice is generally lower than that of a swaged connection. Consequently, spliced slings are typically used in specific applications, such as the steel and chemical industries.

3 .Splice-free wire rope loop

A key feature of seamless rigging is its excellent flexibility, multiple lifting points, high strength, and minimal spatial requirements for hoisting operations. It is particularly well-suited for applications where space is limited or for ultra‑large‑scale lifting projects, such as the handling of heavy components in transformer manufacturing, shipbuilding, and specialized machinery production.

4 . Cast steel wire rope rigging

Casting is a complex manufacturing process that requires operators to undergo specialized training before execution. It demands considerable time, resulting in low efficiency and high costs; however, cast fittings exhibit exceptionally high bond strength, making them well suited for critical applications. On-site casting and installation are common, and each unit must pass a tensile‑strength test prior to shipment.

V. Standards for the Use of Wire Rope Slings

What precautions should be taken when using wire rope slings?

1. Wire rope slings without markings or inspection certificates shall be strictly prohibited from being put into service.

2. Prior to use, perform a routine inspection; if the wire rope or metal components are found to be damaged to a certain extent, they must not be put into service.

3. Overloading is strictly prohibited.

4. The angle between the legs of a wire rope sling shall not exceed 120 degrees.

5. Wire rope slings for metal fittings such as lifting hooks, lifting rings, and chains shall be connected to one another using shackles, and their rated loads shall be equal.

6. When lifting with wire rope slings, ensure smooth operation and avoid impact loads.

7. Implement effective measures to prevent the wire rope from bending at sharp angles or colliding with the load.

8. It is prohibited to drag or drop wire rope slings from a height.

9. Do not use outside the temperature range of -40°C to 100°C.

10. Do not expose to or use in corrosive gases, liquids, or vapors.

11. Wire rope slings that have been in storage for more than two years must undergo tensile testing on a sampling basis as required; they may only be put into service upon passing the test.

VI. Inspection Rules and Frequency for Wire Rope Slings

Wire rope slings inevitably experience varying degrees of wear during use, making routine inspections an indispensable part of maintenance.

1 . Inspection Rules

Pay attention to whether the wire rope has any broken wires, and inspect its degree of wear and corrosion, as well as its lubrication condition. Also check for deformation, kinking, flattening, or other damage. At the eye‑end connections, verify that the fittings are securely tightened and look for signs of wire rope slippage, along with any deformation, wear, corrosion, or cracking of the ferrules.

2 . Inspection cycle

Designated full-time technical personnel shall conduct a routine inspection of wire rope slings once per month; for slings subjected to frequent use, the inspection interval should be shortened in accordance with the frequency of their application.
