How to choose between D‑shaped shackles and bow shackle types, and the differences across various operating conditions.

Type D shackles (straight shackles) and bow shackles (anchor-type shackles) are the two most commonly used types in lifting operations. Their key differences lie in the internal space of the shackle body, their load‑bearing characteristics, and the applicable service conditions; therefore, when selecting and procuring, it is essential to consider more than just the rated capacity.
I. Core Structural Differences
Type D shackle
The shackle has a D‑shaped profile, with a small internal clearance at the opening, resulting in a more compact body and reduced self‑weight. The load is primarily borne along the shackle’s longitudinal axis, delivering excellent straight‑line tensile performance; however, when multiple slings are inserted simultaneously, they can become squeezed and jammed, and the shackle exhibits limited resistance to lateral forces.
Bow shackle
The shackle has a large curvature and ample internal space, allowing multiple slings, lifting eyes, and chains to be threaded through simultaneously; it can withstand combined forces from multiple angles and directions. Under the same rated load, its overall dimensions and weight are greater than those of a D‑shackle; its pure straight‑line vertical tensile strength is slightly lower than that of a D‑shackle of the same capacity.
II. Selection Comparison Table for Different Operating Conditions
| Operating condition scenario | Prioritize | Explanation |
| Single-leg sling lifting in a vertical straight line; limited installation space. | Type D shackle | Compact and lightweight, with optimal payload utilization and excellent cost-effectiveness. |
| Multi-point lifting, with two or more slings converging and being attached. | Bow shackle | Large internal cavity; slings will not crush or cut against each other. |
| Inclined lifting, multi‑angle loading, and sling‑loop lifting of workpieces | Bow shackle | Adapts to multi-directional tensile forces, reducing sling‑induced compression damage. |
| Mold lifting and direct hoisting of equipment using a single lifting point | Type D shackle | Space is limited, and forces are primarily axial. |
| Marine and ship lifting, multi‑rigging configurations | Bow shackle | Suitable for complex rigging configurations with multiple suspension points. |
| Complete set of lifting chain slings and accessories | Bow shackle | Allows multiple chain ends to be connected simultaneously. |
| Lifting in narrow gaps and confined spaces inside equipment | Type D shackle | Compact in design, making installation and positioning convenient. |
III. Key Considerations for Procurement and Use
Tonnage is not equivalent or interchangeable: For the same tonnage rating, Type D and bow shackle configurations have different external dimensions and cannot be interchanged without modification.
Load constraints: D‑shaped shackles should, whenever possible, avoid being subjected to significant lateral loads; such lateral forces can substantially reduce the actual safe working load.
Material grade priority: Preferably use Grade 80 alloy steel shackles; in corrosive environments, select hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel shackles.
Safety Red Line: Both types of shackles must never be overloaded. If cracks, plastic deformation, or severe wear are detected, the shackle must be scrapped; welding repairs are prohibited.
For vertical unidirectional tension only, and when space is limited, choose a D‑shackle.
Multiple slings, multi‑angle inclined lifting, and multiple lifting points converge; prioritize bow shackle connections.
When selecting equipment, in addition to considering the rated load, you should also take into account the actual lifting angle, the number of slings, and the available installation space for a comprehensive assessment.
