As a core component of lifting and connecting systems, the material of shackles directly determines their load‑carrying capacity, corrosion resistance, and suitability for specific operating conditions. Alloy‑steel and stainless‑steel shackles are the mainstream choices on the market, with distinct differences in performance; therefore, selection should be based on a comprehensive assessment of the applied load, environmental factors, and relevant safety standards.
Alloy steel lifting rings (commonly made of 42CrMo)
Key Features
High strength, excellent toughness, and strong load-bearing capacity;
After quenching and tempering heat treatment, it exhibits excellent impact resistance and fatigue strength; its surface can be treated with blackening, galvanizing, Dacromet, or other anti-corrosion processes; however, it is not resistant to highly corrosive environments and is prone to rusting in humid, acidic, or alkaline conditions.
Applicable Scenarios
Lifting of heavy factory equipment, molds, and machine tool fixtures;
Indoor / dry outdoor lifting operations for construction machinery, steel structures, and wind power equipment;
Under heavy-load operating conditions, it is required to withstand impact loads and repeated lifting operations.
Short-term lifting of logistics containers and heavy-duty crates.
Not recommended scenarios
Seaside salt‑spray environments, chemical acid‑alkali environments, and long‑term wet‑immersion environments.
Stainless steel lifting rings (common grades: A4-316 / A2-304)
Key Features
Excellent rust resistance, salt‑spray resistance, and resistance to mild acid corrosion; smooth surface finish; tensile strength lower than that of alloy steel of the same specification, so it cannot be selected based on alloy‑steel load ratings under heavy‑load conditions; not suitable for withstanding high‑impact loads.
Note: Grade 304 is suitable for ordinary humid environments; Grade 316 is resistant to seawater and chloride-ion corrosion and is commonly used in marine applications.
Applicable Scenarios
Marine vessels, port equipment, and offshore wind power; lifting operations in salt‑spray environments.
Food, pharmaceutical, and chemical equipment; operating conditions with cleanliness and corrosion‑resistance requirements.
In outdoor, long-term, open-air conditions with frequent rainfall, situations that could lead to rust and contamination of the workpiece must be avoided.
Light- and medium-duty equipment shall be secured and lifted without subjecting it to severe impacts.
Not recommended scenarios
Ultra‑large, heavy‑load lifting with frequent impact; hoisting of heavy dies and large steel structures.
Quick Selection Comparison Chart
| Comparison Item | Alloy steel lifting ring | Stainless steel lifting ring |
|---|---|---|
| Material | 42CrMo and other alloy steels | 304 / 316 stainless steel |
| Carrying capacity | High, impact-resistant and fatigue-resistant | Moderate; not suitable for impact loads. |
| Corrosion resistance | Generally, a surface coating is required; it is prone to rusting in salt spray. | Excellent; 316 stainless steel is resistant to seawater and salt spray. |
| Typical industries | Molds, heavy industry, steel structures, machine tools | Ships, food, chemicals, marine equipment |
| Cost | Higher cost-performance ratio under the same specifications. | Higher price |
Selection Summary
✅ Prioritize alloy steel lifting rings: ideal for heavy‑duty lifting, frequent hoisting, and impact loads; suitable for dry environments or short‑term outdoor use, offering high load capacity and excellent cost‑effectiveness.
✅ Prioritize stainless steel lifting rings: suitable for humid environments, salt spray, and acidic/alkaline conditions; ideal when rust contamination is unacceptable; designed for light to medium loads, with no severe impact, and intended for long-term fixed installation and lifting.
Important reminder: Regardless of the type of lifting ring, always verify its rated load capacity before use, strictly adhere to lifting safety regulations, conduct regular visual and nondestructive inspections, and never operate it beyond its rated capacity.
